Our story : A romantic chance meeting that changed both our lives

”After shooting weddings for over 20 year I thought I had pretty much heard every romantic meeting story. Until it happened to Us. I had no idea that my life was about to change so much with in one chance meeting on a hike in a foreign country.

I met Kristen on Valentines Day in 2018. - Purely by chance. She was on a 2 month road trip across America accompanied by her dog Farlo. I was on a road trip to Colorado to go snowboarding with my best friends Arno and Andrew.

It’s fairytale story that starts at the top of Angel Landing in ****** and culminated in a close private wedding ceremony on the banks of the ***** Lake in ***** in August later that year.

Angels Landing is a very serious hike. It’s a reputation for being dangerous and beautiful cannot be understated enough. One moment you admiring the beautiful view and the next you having vertigo looking over the 1765 meter drop to the bottom. Not for the faint hearted. So while my friend Arno climb to the summit I chose to follow my gut and just chill halfway and enjoy the beauty without feeling like I’m going to plummet to my death.

Standing around waiting for my friends we started chatting, taking in the beautiful view as we exchanged details about where we were from and naturally why we had not ventured up the dangerous route to the summit both being scared of heights.

We chatted and spent the rest of the afternoon together as we walked down the mountain again and shared all kinds of story’s and experiences that had brought us to this place. Kristen from Canada and myself from South Africa, we has lots to talk about. She told me that she had always wanted to see Africa and just had not the opportunity to go yet.

Only too soon we arrived at the foot of the mountain, both need to go our separate ways. By this time storm clouds had rolled in and it had begun to rain. We stood there, gazing at one another, almost frozen in the moment. “No pressure I thought, its was a great chat, I’m getting wet and my friends are waiting, but I need to see her again, I just have to” . I saved Kristen’s number into my phone and we said our goodbyes and with 48 hours I was back in South Africa. Over the following weeks we exchanged numerous texts and a month later Kristen was on her way to see me in South Africa.
“I don’t usually fly halfway across the world on 36 hr flight to spend a month with a guy I only casually new for 6 hours. It just felt right” - Kristen commented.

After waiting 6 weeks to finally see Kristen again we toured throughout South Africa, visiting Cape Town, Tsitsikamma and Storms river, then Jeffreys Bay where I lived and surfed for years. Of course a trip to Africa wouldn’t be the same without a Game Safari drive. Kristens favourite animals were the Elephants and Giraffe.
